Yasunari Kawabata (川端 康成, Kawabata Yasunari, 11 June 1899 – 16 April 1972) was a Japanese novelist and short story writer whose spare, lyrical, subtly-shaded prose works won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968, the first Japanese author to receive the award.
In awarding the prize, the Nobel Committee cited three of his novels, Snow Country, Thousand Cranes, and The Old Capital. In the Nobel Prize Memorial Lecture, Kawabata delivered the speech “Japan, the Beautiful, and Myself”. An insight to his aesthetics can also be found in his lecture at Hawaii University The Existence and Discovery of Beauty (1969).
